Nothing wrong with the plan, except…

It’s just not me.

I enjoy university. The problems start after. I can’t settle down to any kind of real career. In my gut I know I don’t want to work for someone else.

So finally I commit to becoming an entrepreneur. But I’m late to the game.

It takes me years to summon the courage because I’m torn between the free-thinking entrepreneur that is the real me and my play-it-safe childhood programming.

All those wasted years!

And now it’s 15th January 2013, I’m sitting in my office, and I’ve run out of time. I have to make the decision that I’ve been putting off for months…

Every way I look at it I’ve run out of road.

I have to pull the plug on the business I’ve spent the last four years of my life trying to build.

So I pick up the phone to my three amazing staff. Three calls – back to back to back – in which I fire them.

This is the worst part of the worst day in my business and professional life.

The next day is a void.

The business is gone. The staff are gone. The clients are gone.

Like someone just flipped a switch.

And after living and breathing the business every day for four years with nothing to show at the end I feel truly burnt out…

Unfortunately, stopping is not an option.

While the business may be gone, I’m still personally liable for some serious business debt.

What saves me is a book.

Or more precisely my discovery that I can publish worldwide directly through Amazon.

Because as well as now being a failed entrepreneur I’m also the author of two books that have never seen the light of day.

I realise the publishing landscape is now transformed: I can bypass the twin gatekeepers of agent and publisher and go direct to the public.

So I create a system to publish and market my books. It’s a personal project – nothing to do with business.

Three weeks later I have my first epiphany moment…

I could teach this!

I could do it combining three things I love: writing, teaching and online marketing.

And so I write what becomes the book that launches my new business.

Not wanting to fail again I immerse myself in business strategy. I realise there are certain keys to success and it amazes me how little understood they are.

I look back and it’s clear I could have saved myself years of pain and stress.

Unfortunately, stopping is not an option.

And I come to a realisation: my business was doomed from the start...

No matter how hard we worked I had set the game up in a way that made it almost impossible for us to succeed.

I feel stupid. But strangely I also start to forgive myself. I go from beating myself up inside to realising I did the best I could with what I knew.

I had failed because there’s a universal three step foundation for lasting business success… and my business was missing all of them:

I didn’t know my Superpower. I wasn’t clear on my Ideal Client. And that meant I could never create my Irresistible Offer.

Talking to other entrepreneurs I discover many are missing these same three essential pieces and so are working far harder than necessary (and for worse results).

That's when I have my second epiphany moment:

I realise that I enjoy working with authors… but I love working with entrepreneurs!

Yes, I love to write and I love books. But in my heart and at my core I’m an entrepreneur. That is my true essence.

Knowing where I went wrong it becomes a source of real pain watching fellow entrepreneurs making the same mistakes.

That’s where everything came together:

The skill set I’d developed of publishing books and running bestseller campaigns together with my knowledge of how entrepreneurs succeed or fail.

Suddenly my Mission is clear and obvious…

I’m going to help entrepreneurs position themselves for success so that they can rapidly grow their businesses the right way:

By attracting their ideal clients and charging what they’re truly worth.

Now I get to be my authentic free-thinking entrepreneurial self every day! And I get to help other like-minded entrepreneurs do the same – without them wasting the time and making the mistakes that I made along the way.

It’s like everything’s come full circle.

Today I’m exactly where I was supposed to be from the very beginning!
